Guillaume and Kelly Gonnet are long-time friends of the AWM, and their Bird wines have been a staple at the shop for the last ten-plus years. AWM customers know that when the label reads Guillaume Gonnet and has a bird on it, the wine in the bottle will be delicious!
Guillaume comes from a long line of celebrated winemakers and viticulturists and has been deeply influenced by his family’s lengthy history in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Kelly delivers a unique and imaginative perspective shaped by her Australian background in the New World. They collaborated to create the Bird Wines, combining Old and New World inspirations while balancing classic Rhône tradition with innovation.
Côtes du Rhône appellated wines consistently deliver remarkable quality, happily at very approachable prices compared to their prestigious neighbors like Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These wines, produced across a vast swath of the Rhône’s diverse landscape, benefit from an array of soils—including limestone, clay, and the famed galets roulés. These large, rounded stones enhance warmth retention and drainage, keeping the vines cozy in the evenings of cooler months.
The diverse geology of the Rhône Valley, along with its warm Mediterranean climate, produces grapes that yield bold, expressive flavors with a gorgeous minerality. This remarkable confluence of elements yields wines that are structured yet remain approachable, offering both depth and balance.
Description
Le Rêveur Rouge — Green Bird
Guillaume’s Green Bird needs little or no introduction for most AWM customers since it’s been our top-selling wine for close to a decade. I can’t think of a wine that captures the vibrant essence of southern Rhône reds better than the Green Bird, and we eagerly await the arrival of the new vintage each year!
Le Rêveur Côtes du Rhône Rouge, aka the Green Bird, is sourced from a selection of the family’s vineyards just outside of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Most of the vineyards are planted on south-facing plateaus, and the soil is covered with golf ball-sized galets — remarkably similar to the galet-laden clay and limestone soil of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
This smooth and easy-going Rhône is the perfect red to enjoy on a cool spring evening out on the deck or patio and will be the perfect partner for your summer gatherings and grill-outs. In your glass, deep, dark, black cherry and blackberry mingle with garrigue and spice, leading to a palate of dark cherry, red licorice, and plenty of savory, spicy notes in counterpoint to the powerful and delicious fruit.
Pair this with all of your grilling adventures, rich, savory stews, and braised meats
